Dr. Joshua Corsa, who works in the Department of Surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where the majority of patients from the Pulse shooting were rushed, shared a photo of his bloodied shoes with an important reminder to have faith in humanity even in the lowest times.

While we’re all still trying to comprehend the unfathomable tragedy that occurred in Orlando, one physician’s Facebook post is shedding light on some of the heroes that walk amongst us.

“On these shoes, soaked between its fibers, is the blood of 54 innocent human beings,” Corsa wrote on Facebook. “I don’t know which were straight, which were gay, which were black, or which were hispanic. What I do know is that they came to us in wave upon wave of suffering, screaming, and death. And somehow, in that chaos, doctors, nurses, technicians, police, paramedics, and others, performed superhuman feats of compassion and care.”

“This blood, which poured out of those patients and soaked through my scrubs and shoes, will stain me forever,” he continued. “In these Rorschach patterns of red I will forever see their faces and the faces of those that gave everything they had in those dark hours.”

Dr. Corsa added that he plans to prominently display these shoes in his office so that he’s reminded of the countless colleagues who did the best they could that night, and continue to treat the victims.

“I want to see them in front of me every time I go to work,” Corsa said. “For on June 12, after the worst of humanity reared its evil head, I saw the best of humanity come fighting right back. I never want to forget that night.”
